Romans 5:8 is a one-sentence summary of the Gospel!
The verse is part of a letter, written by a man named Paul, who started churches throughout the Roman Empire in the first century. Paul's letter to the church in Rome likely was written in the late 50s AD. The letter reads like a rich theological statement or sermon.
In Romans 5:8, Paul explains succinctly and gloriously how God "proves" (or demonstrates) His love for sinners: By sending Jesus (who is God the Son) to die for sinners.
All humans have sin against God (see Romans 3:23) and sin requires eternal death (see Romans 6:23). But the Good News of Romans 5:8 is that Jesus died while we were sinners, for our sin, out of love. Jesus substituted Himself for sinners, taking the eternal death sinners deserved.
Jesus rose to life so that sinners who believe in Jesus might have new and eternal life (see Romans 6:4).
From Church History
“Your name was in the condemned list, my fellow-sinner, but, if you believe in Jesus, you shall find that your name is there no longer, for Christ’s name is put in your stead … ‘Christ died for us’ … O my hearers, from my inmost heart I pray that this boundless wealth of love … may win your hearts to love the heavenly Lover in return.”
